Manufacturing Quality Control of m-Tolyl isocyanate

Test Item Common Test Method Method Overview
Purity (Main Component Content) Gas Chromatography (GC) Capillary column gas chromatography is used with area normalization or external standard method for quantification. The purity of m-tolyl isocyanate is evaluated based on the peak area percentage of the main component. Typically, an FID detector is used, with nitrogen or helium as the carrier gas.
Isocyanate Group (-NCO) Content Titration Method (Dibutylamine Method) The sample reacts with excess dibutylamine to form a urea derivative. Unreacted dibutylamine is back-titrated with a standardized hydrochloric acid solution. The -NCO content is calculated from the amount of hydrochloric acid consumed. This method is recommended by standards such as ISO 14896.
Moisture Content Karl Fischer Titration Moisture in the sample reacts quantitatively with Karl Fischer reagent. Water content is determined using either coulometric or volumetric methods. Due to the high reactivity of isocyanates with water, testing must be performed quickly and under inert atmosphere.
Color Platinum-Cobalt Colorimetric Method (Hazen Method) The sample is placed in a colorimeter tube and visually compared to standard platinum-cobalt solutions to determine color intensity. Results are expressed in Hazen units (or APHA units), used to evaluate product appearance and degree of oxidation or impurity.
Acid Value Acid-Base Titration Free acids in the sample (e.g., trace amounts of toluene dicarboxylic acid) are titrated with a standardized potassium hydroxide ethanol solution, using phenolphthalein as indicator. The acid value is expressed as mg KOH per gram of sample.
Volatile Impurities / Residual Solvents Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) or Headspace Gas Chromatography (HS-GC) Volatile organic impurities (e.g., residual solvents such as toluene, chlorobenzene) are separated and identified by GC or GC-MS. Quantification is performed using internal or external standard methods, in compliance with guidelines such as ICH Q3C.
Density Density Meter or Pycnometer Method Density is measured at a specified temperature (e.g., 20°C or 25°C) using a digital density meter or pycnometer, serving as an auxiliary quality control parameter.
